Walt Disney World turns 55 with Villains Land, Monstropolis and Lakeshore Lodge on the way
Walt Disney World marked 55 years on October 1, 2026, counting more than 70 new or refreshed experiences in the past five years and two cast members who have worked there since opening day. Next up: a Cars land and Villains Land at Magic Kingdom, Monstropolis and Tropical Americas in 2027, and Disney's Lakeshore Lodge on July 1, 2027.

Walt Disney World turned 55 on Thursday, October 1, and the resort that opened with a single theme park is now the most visited theme park resort in the world. The birthday arrives with what may be its most ambitious chapter yet under construction: two new lands at Magic Kingdom, Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios, Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom and a new hotel.

Key Details
- Anniversary: Thursday, October 1, 2026
- Magic Kingdom opened: October 1, 1971
- Added in the past five years: More than 70 new or refreshed experiences

How 27,400 acres of swampland became the Vacation Kingdom
Walt Disney World opened small in 1971, and it opened at all only because Roy O. Disney stayed on after his brother died.
- The original pitch. Disney billed the new Florida resort as "The Vacation Kingdom of the World."
- The land. The resort was built on 27,400 acres of Central Florida swampland.
- Opening-day size. One theme park, two hotels and a campground: Magic Kingdom, the Contemporary and Polynesian hotels, and the Fort Wilderness campground.
- Walt's death. Walt Disney died in 1966, just one year after announcing his Florida plans.
- Roy's decision. His older brother, Roy Oliver Disney, put off his own retirement to see the project through to opening day.
More than 70 additions in five years, from TRON to Bluey
WKMG's ClickOrlando counts the past five years of additions as nearly a full theme park's worth of investment across the parks and hotels.
- At Magic Kingdom. TRON Lightcycle / Run, a motorbike-style coaster in Tomorrowland, and Tiana's Bayou Adventure, the log flume that replaced Splash Mountain in Frontierland.
- At EPCOT. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, an indoor coaster whose ride vehicles rotate to face the action.
- At Animal Kingdom. Bluey's Wild World, built around the Australian animated children's series Bluey.
Joe Schott, president of Walt Disney World Resort, tied the milestone to the cast and to what the resort's growth means for Central Florida.
"As we celebrate 55 years, we're proud of the incredible cast members who have shaped our story and excited about the opportunities ahead as Walt Disney World continues to grow. That growth creates opportunity across Central Florida, and it reflects our long-term confidence in this community and in the future of Walt Disney World." Joe Schott, president of Walt Disney World Resort
Frank and Earliene have worked at Walt Disney World since opening day
Disney marked the anniversary by spotlighting two cast members who started on October 1, 1971, and are still with the company.
- Frank's role today. He is an Entertainment Readiness Manager with Disney Live Entertainment, the Disney division that stages the parks' shows and parades.
- Earliene's role today. She is a merchandise hostess at Disney's Contemporary Resort, the A-frame hotel on the monorail line and one of the two opening-day hotels.
The 55th anniversary merchandise collection
Disney is marking the milestone with a new merchandise collection of clothing, accessories and drinkware.
- Clothing range. Shirts, hoodies and hats commemorate the resort's 55th anniversary.
- Ears and backpacks. Minnie ears and backpacks are part of the line.
- Tumblers too. Drinkware rounds out the collection.
The reports did not list prices or name the shops carrying each piece.
The one firm date so far: Lakeshore Lodge on July 1, 2027
Construction is under way in three parks, and only the new hotel carries a day on the calendar.
- Magic Kingdom lands. A Cars-themed land and Villains Land are under construction in what Disney calls the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history.
- Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios. The Monsters, Inc. area brings a theater show, dining and shopping when it opens in 2027.
- Tropical Americas. An entirely new Animal Kingdom area with attractions inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones, also due in 2027.
- Disney's Lakeshore Lodge. The resort's next new hotel is set to open July 1, 2027.
Our take. If you are sketching a 2027 trip, July 1 is the only firm date so far: Monstropolis and Tropical Americas carry a year but no day, and the Magic Kingdom lands carry no date at all, so keep plans refundable until Disney names them.
