Walt Disney World turns 55 with more than 70 new or refreshed experiences since its 50th
Walt Disney World marked 55 years on October 1, 2026, and Disney counted more than 70 experiences opened or refreshed since the 50th anniversary, from TRON Lightcycle / Run to a recolored Cinderella Castle. Still to come are Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land at Magic Kingdom, Monstropolis and Tropical Americas in 2027, and Disney's Lakeshore Lodge on July 1, 2027.

Walt Disney World turned 55 on Thursday, October 1, 2026, and Disney marked the day by counting what has changed since the 50th anniversary: more than 70 experiences opened or refreshed since 2021, which the Disney Parks Blog called nearly a theme park's worth. Its anniversary post named favorites in nine categories and pointed to the projects still coming to Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.

Key Details
- Anniversary: Thursday, October 1, 2026
- Opening day: October 1, 1971, when Magic Kingdom opened
- Since the 50th: more than 70 experiences opened or refreshed since 2021
- Where: all four theme parks and the resort hotels
- Sources: the Disney Parks Blog anniversary post and WKMG News 6 in Orlando
One park, two hotels and a campground in 1971
The resort opened small, and it opened after the man who planned it had died.
- The Florida Project. Walt and Roy O. Disney unveiled their Florida plans, which they called the Florida Project, at a press conference in 1965.
- Roy finished it. Walt Disney died in 1966, a year after that announcement, and his older brother Roy postponed his own retirement to see the resort open.
- The first footprint. The 1971 resort was one theme park, two hotels and a campground on 27,400 acres of Central Florida swampland.
- Walt's name for it. Walt Disney had envisioned the place as "The Vacation Kingdom of the World."
Fifty-five years on, News 6 calls it the world's most visited theme park resort. The Disney Parks Blog used the day to thank cast members and guests, who it said carry Walt's vision forward every day.
Two night shows and a rebuilt EPCOT
Disney's list opens after dark and with the multi-year EPCOT overhaul that reached every neighborhood of the park.
- Luminous at EPCOT. Luminous The Symphony of Us, EPCOT's nighttime spectacular of fireworks, fountains and music, arrived in 2023.
- Starlight at Magic Kingdom. Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away, a nighttime parade of dreamers and doers from Disney stories, followed in 2025.
- Remy and Space 220. Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, a ride in the France pavilion, and Space 220, a restaurant themed to a space station, both opened in 2021.
- Cosmic Rewind. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, an indoor roller coaster with cars that rotate, opened in 2023.
- A new park center. Dreamers Point, a plaza with a statue of Walt Disney, and World Celebration Gardens opened in 2023; CommuniCore Hall and Plaza followed in 2024.
Coasters, a log flume and meals with a storyline
Three thrill rides and three story-driven venues fill the next two categories on Disney's list.
- TRON Lightcycle / Run. The Magic Kingdom coaster, ridden on motorbike-style lightcycles and presented by Enterprise, opened in 2023.
- Tiana's Bayou Adventure. The Magic Kingdom log flume opened in 2024 and features a 55-foot drop.
- The Muppets coaster. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, new at Hollywood Studios in 2026, races riders to a sold-out concert by the Electric Mayhem, the Muppets' band.
- Roundup Rodeo BBQ. At this 2023 Toy Story Land restaurant in Hollywood Studios, diners freeze mid-meal whenever they hear "Andy's coming!"
- The Beak and Barrel. This 2025 pirate tavern sits in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom, and Disney calls it the rowdiest tavern in the land.
- A Zootopia show. Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, new in 2025, plays inside the Tree of Life Theater at Animal Kingdom.
The post's author said two young nephews, ages 10 and 8, rank coasters as the best part of a visit, with Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios a perennial favorite of the older one.
Bluey, Mickey and three stage shows
The family and stage picks are mostly from the last two years, and two of the three shows play at Hollywood Studios.
- Bluey's Wild World. Bluey and Bingo, the sisters from the Australian cartoon Bluey, meet families at Conservation Station in Animal Kingdom; the experience opened in 2026.
- Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live. The Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! Show, new in 2026, has families dancing and playing along with Mickey Mouse and his friends.
- Drawing with Olaf. At The Magic of Disney Animation in Hollywood Studios, opened in 2026, Olaf and Disney Animation artists teach guests to draw Disney characters.
- The Country Bears. Country Bear Musical Jamboree, refreshed at Magic Kingdom in 2024, has the bears singing bluegrass and country-western versions of Disney songs.
- Two Hollywood Studios musicals. The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure and Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After, where the audience weighs which villain was treated most unfairly, both arrived in 2025.
More than 18,000 hotel rooms redone since 2021
Disney counts its hotels among the anniversary highlights, from room makeovers to new places to stay.
- Refreshed rooms. More than 18,000 rooms across 10 resort hotels were refreshed between 2021 and 2025.
- Island Tower. The tower opened in 2024 at Disney's Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, the Disney Vacation Club side of the Polynesian resort.
- Fort Wilderness cabins. New cabins opened at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground in 2024.

Classic rides with new material and a recolored castle
Several older attractions picked up new story elements, and Cinderella Castle went back to a classic look.
- Test Track. The reimagined Test Track presented by General Motors reopened at EPCOT in 2025.
- Buzz Lightyear. Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom returned in 2026 with Buddy, a Star Command support bot who gives riders target tips.
- Big Thunder Mountain. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the Magic Kingdom mine train coaster, got its refresh in 2026.
- Smugglers Run mission. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Hollywood Studios added a new mission in 2026 that puts riders alongside Grogu.
- Cinderella Castle. The castle returned in 2026 to a storybook color scheme of blues, creams, grays and golds.
Monstropolis, Tropical Americas and Lakeshore Lodge are dated for 2027
Construction continues at three parks, but the new hotel is the only project with a firm opening day.
- Magic Kingdom expansion. Disney calls it the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history: Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed land, plus Villains Land.
- Carousel of Progress. Disney's post also lists Carousel of Progress, the Tomorrowland show that debuted at the 1964 New York World's Fair, among its upcoming projects.
- Monstropolis. The Monsters, Inc. land at Hollywood Studios will bring a theater show, dining and shopping when it opens in 2027, News 6 reported.
- Tropical Americas. Animal Kingdom's new area, with attractions inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones, is slated for 2027.
- Lakeshore Lodge. Disney's Lakeshore Lodge, a new resort hotel, is set to open on July 1, 2027.
Walt Disney World Resort president Joe Schott tied that growth to the region in comments carried by News 6.
"As we celebrate 55 years, we're proud of the incredible cast members who have shaped our story and excited about the opportunities ahead as Walt Disney World continues to grow," Schott said. "That growth creates opportunity across Central Florida, and it reflects our long-term confidence in this community and in the future of Walt Disney World."
Our take. For a 2027 trip, Lakeshore Lodge's July 1 opening is the one date to plan around today. Monstropolis and Tropical Americas carry only a year, and neither source gives a date for Piston Peak or Villains Land.
