Walt Disney World opens its 50th anniversary with Enchantment, Harmonious and an 18-month celebration

Walt Disney World turned 50 on October 1, and the resort marked it by starting an 18-month celebration, premiering two new nighttime spectaculars on consecutive nights, and opening a new EPCOT attraction. By mid-afternoon on the anniversary itself, Disney had also closed Magic Kingdom to Park Hopper arrivals as the crowds built.

An 18-month celebration, not a single day
Walt Disney World Resort opened on October 1, 1971. The 50th anniversary was never planned as a one-day event: "The World's Most Magical Celebration" runs 18 months across all four theme parks, built on new nighttime shows, new attractions, the resort-wide EARidescent colour treatment applied to costumes, decor and merchandise, and a long run of anniversary food and beverage.
The EARidescent look reached the characters. Mickey, Minnie and the rest appeared in new anniversary outfits, and Magic Kingdom introduced a new cavalcade down Main Street, U.S.A. to carry them. The celebration also arrived with its own anthem, "The Magic Is Calling," which Disney played publicly for the first time during a virtual media event the morning before the anniversary.
The scale showed clearest in the Fab 50 character collection: fifty golden character statues distributed across the four parks, which turns the anniversary into a resort-wide hunt that will outlast any single show.
Two nighttime premieres in two nights
The centrepiece of the celebration is a pair of nighttime spectaculars, premiered on consecutive nights and both live-streamed by Disney.
Harmonious went first, over EPCOT's World Showcase Lagoon. The roughly 20-minute show had been years in the making, and it runs on hardware as much as music: giant projection screens, lasers, water features and fireworks working together on the lagoon. The theme is the World Showcase idea itself, the cultures around the lagoon brought together as one, with familiar Disney songs reinterpreted through different musical traditions and languages.
"For me personally it's that score, it's the music, your favorite Disney songs in a different way, it's a twist that you won't believe, it's one of those that you'll be singing along, but then we'll click into that cultural dialect, that language, and bring it to life in a way that hasn't been heard." The following night, Disney Enchantment premiered at Magic Kingdom. Its biggest departure from what came before is where the show happens. Rather than confining projections to Cinderella Castle, Enchantment extends them down Main Street, U.S.A., so the buildings lining the street become part of the canvas and guests standing well back from the hub are inside the show rather than watching it from behind.
Enchantment's first public showing landed on the anniversary itself. An hour before showtime on October 1, Main Street was already packed end to end.
Magic Kingdom paused park hopping as crowds built
The crowd management story of the day arrived at 4 p.m., when Disney posted an alert in the My Disney Experience app. The Park Hopper option into Magic Kingdom was temporarily unavailable while the company worked to "carefully" manage attendance. Guests already inside were unaffected, and guests holding a Magic Kingdom park reservation could still enter. The pause applied only to hopping in from another park.
The odd part, reported from inside the park by News 6 in Orlando, whose team covered the anniversary live from both Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, is that ride waits stayed reasonable through the day. The queues that did not were for merchandise and food. That has been the recurring pattern at Disney anniversary events: attractions absorb the crowd, while limited-run merchandise and anniversary snacks concentrate it.
For guests who had planned around the date, the day still delivered. Among those on Main Street were Sally and Matt Hedrick, visiting from New Orleans, who have been coming to Walt Disney World since the 1970s.
What opened, and what Disney dated
The anniversary doubled as a delivery date. Remy's Ratatouille Adventure opened at EPCOT on October 1, giving the France pavilion its first attraction along with a full merchandise line. The trackless ride shrinks guests to Remy's scale for a chase through Gusteau's kitchen, and it anchors the expanded France pavilion.
Disney also gave media an early walk-through of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, still under construction in the former Universe of Energy building. Cameras were sealed away for the preview, but the shape of the attraction was clear: an indoor coaster with a reverse launch, described at the time as the longest indoor coaster of its kind.
Two more dates came out of Disney's virtual event the same week. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the two-night immersive hotel experience beside Disney's Hollywood Studios, was dated for March 1, 2022. MagicBand+ was announced for 2022 as a successor to the 2013 MagicBand, with interactive features the original never had: reacting to fireworks, unlocking interactions in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and responding to the Fab 50 statues scattered across the parks.
Disney detailed Disney Genie as well, the free itinerary planning service arriving in My Disney Experience, which brings with it the paid Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane purchases that replace FastPass+.
EPCOT's own transformation is running in parallel. The old Future World is being split into three neighborhoods, World Celebration, World Nature and World Discovery, and Spaceship Earth has gained a "Beacon of Magic" lighting treatment, one of four icon lighting packages across the parks for the anniversary.
The anniversary reached the athletics calendar too. runDisney confirmed the return of races to Walt Disney World, with EARidescent-finished medals for Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. At Disney Springs, Cirque du Soleil's Drawn to Life was preparing its own debut.
The one date to put in the calendar: March 1, 2022
Of everything announced across the anniversary week, the hardest date is March 1, 2022, when Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser begins its two-night voyages. It is the most expensive and most tightly capacity-limited thing Walt Disney World has ever sold, and the one that will need booking furthest ahead.
Everything else runs long. With the celebration set at 18 months, there is no need to chase Harmonious, Enchantment or the Fab 50 statues in the opening weeks, when Main Street fills an hour before showtime and Park Hopper access can be pulled at short notice. The quieter play is to let the anniversary crowds thin and come back for the same shows with room to stand.
Worth watching in the meantime: Cosmic Rewind, which still has no opening date, and the rest of EPCOT's rebuild into World Celebration, World Nature and World Discovery, work that will outlast the anniversary banners by years.
