The Quietest Mornings of the Year Are Back: Magic Kingdom Adds 7:30 a.m. Early Entry for Party Season

Walt Disney World has pushed Magic Kingdom's official opening to 8 a.m. on eight August dates, which moves Early Entry for resort guests to 7:30 a.m. Every Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party date through August 22 is on the list, along with two Saturdays, and evening hours were extended at three parks at the same time.

Key details

Which dates got the earlier opening

August 7 is the first Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party of the year, and Magic Kingdom was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day. The latest round of extensions moved it to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the same 8 a.m. opening has since been added to seven more dates:

That covers every Halloween party date through August 22 plus a pair of Saturdays running 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Because the list already extends past the start of the school year, it is a reasonable signal for more of the same in late August and September, when Disney has historically applied the same treatment to party dates.

Why 7:30 a.m. is different from 8:30 a.m.

Early Entry gives guests at Disney resort hotels 30 minutes in the park before it opens to everyone else, so the start time moves with the official opening. A 9 a.m. opening means 8:30 a.m. Early Entry, which is early enough that a large share of resort guests will make it. Pulling the start back to 7:30 a.m. shrinks that pool considerably, and the attractions available at Magic Kingdom during Early Entry sit in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, which is where the longest standby lines form later in the day.

The earlier openings also land on days that already run light. Magic Kingdom closes to day guests at 6 p.m. on party nights, and neither the Disney Starlight night parade nor the Happily Ever After fireworks are shown to them, so most visitors without a Park Hopper choose a different park or a different date. The extra half hour is being added to the mornings that need it least, which is exactly what makes it worth using.

The nights got longer too

Magic Kingdom's closing time has been extended to 11 p.m. through August 22 on every night except August 16, which also brings a second showing of the Disney Starlight parade at 11 p.m. Extended Evening Hours, open to guests of the Deluxe Resorts, Deluxe Villa Resorts and select other hotels, then run from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. on those dates. Those hours draw heavier crowds in summer than they do the rest of the year, because the late slot is also the coolest part of the day.

Disney's Hollywood Studios has closings pushed to 10 p.m. on a number of dates through August 22, which normally brings a second Fantasmic at 10:30 p.m. A show that starts half an hour after the park closes is one of the quieter tickets on property. Disney's Animal Kingdom, which defaults to 6 p.m. in summer, has picked up several 7 p.m. closings and one 8 p.m. closing on August 8.

How to use the extra half hour

The bridges into Fantasyland and Tomorrowland are no longer used as holding pens, so guests can walk to their first queue as soon as the turnstiles open rather than waiting for a rope drop. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is the standard first stop, since it is the one Early Entry attraction with no realistic evening alternative on a 6 p.m. closing day. Peter Pan's Flight is the natural second. TRON Lightcycle Run has frequently been running during Early Entry even though it is not on the official roster, which makes it a worthwhile gamble but a poor opener.

Frontierland and Adventureland absorb the rest of the morning. Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and Tiana's Bayou Adventure all hold short waits past the official opening on party dates. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, closed through last year's party season for a 16-month refurbishment, is expected back for this one, and Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin should be running as well, so more capacity is online than a year ago.

Haunted Mansion is among the Liberty Square attractions that stay walkable late into a party morning.

Two things run against the trend. Character meet and greets get busier on 6 p.m. closing days because the operating window is shorter, so they are better handled early or skipped. And the park fills through the afternoon, with the real surge arriving around 4 p.m. as party guests check in. The quiet stretch is long, but it is not the whole day.

The Buzz

What this means for guests

Anyone whose trip falls inside the published window should re-check their Magic Kingdom day, because a 9 a.m. plan built a month ago may now be an 8 a.m. day. Guests travelling later than August 22 will not see these times yet and should not read anything into it, since the extensions post on a rolling basis a few weeks out. The pairing that gets the most out of the calendar is a party date at Magic Kingdom for the morning, then a Park Hopper evening elsewhere, or a Hollywood Studios night built around the 10:30 p.m. Fantasmic.
