Disney Calls It an Updated Look at Piston Peak, and the D23 Model Shows the Second Attraction

Disney Parks posted an 18-second video billed as an updated look at Piston Peak National Park the night before D23 opened in Anaheim. Disney Parks Blog then confirmed the piece that matters: a 19-by-19-foot model of the Cars area coming to Magic Kingdom, carrying the first look at a second attraction Disney has never shown, plus a land marquee display with a Goat Cart.

Disney Parks Blog then put a number on what is waiting inside the Imagineering: Horizons pavilion: a model 19 feet on a side that carries the first look at the land's second attraction.

The video Disney posted without explaining it

The clip went up at 6:26 p.m. Pacific on Wednesday, August 13, hours before the doors opened on D23, and it runs 18 seconds. The description does no work at all: it is the channel's standard block of subscribe and follow links, signed off with the hashtags #D23, #DisneyParks and #Disney. The title carries the entire claim.

One line of dialogue is audible in it: "What a beautiful day in Piston Peak. Wait, is it fritter time?"

Nineteen feet of model, and a ride nobody has seen

Disney Parks Blog published a preview of the Imagineering: Horizons pavilion the same day, and that is where the specifics live. "For Piston Peak National Park coming to Magic Kingdom," Disney wrote, "a stunning 19-by-19-foot model will offer guests a look into the new themed area, including a first look at the second attraction."

The last five words are the story. Disney announced two rides for this land in 2024 and has only ever detailed one of them, the off-road rally race. The second has been a line item on a list. A model built at that size, with the whole area laid out, is the first time its design exists anywhere the public can look at it.

Standing next to it will be a photo op: a display of the land marquee with a Goat Cart parked at it.

The rest of the Walt Disney World slate in the pavilion

Piston Peak shares the floor with most of the resort's other in-progress work. Disney listed two new costumes, two maquettes and a new attraction poster for the reimagined Carousel of Progress; Audio-Animatronics figures from the Encanto side of Tropical Americas at Disney's Animal Kingdom, plus a model of that project's Indiana Jones temple facade; a mood board and painted maquettes of monster creatures for Monstropolis at Disney's Hollywood Studios; and two themed tree sculpts for the villains land planned beside Piston Peak at Magic Kingdom.

Disney says more than 150 Imagineers are staffing the pavilion, which also runs a Center Stage with more than 30 presentations across the event.

Fans called this one early

Walt Disney Imagineering set this up earlier this month with a time lapse of a large sectional model being lowered into shipping crates bound for the convention center, scored to an instrumental of "Life Is A Highway" and captioned with nothing. Fans decoded it inside a few hours. The pavilion preview confirms they were right.

What to watch this weekend

D23 runs August 14 to 16 at the Anaheim Convention Center, with Imagineering: Horizons on the show floor. Saturday is the bigger date: Horizons: A Carousel of Progress streams live on Disney+ at 7 p.m. Pacific with Neil Patrick Harris hosting, and Disney has promised project updates, first looks, new artwork and renderings from Imagineering leaders. An opening date for Piston Peak is the one thing Disney still has not said out loud, and that show is where it would land. Disney posts its own announcements at DisneyParksBlog.com.
