Disney's first suspended coaster
The door coaster remains the cornerstone of Monstropolis, and Hundgen confirmed it will be a first for the company. "It's a showstopper," he said. "It's the first hanging coaster we've ever done at Disney anywhere in the world. That opening scene will take you straight into the laugh floor, and guests will be placed into contraptions that Mike has created to harness both laughs and screams." The launch is built for a jolt: 40 feet up in four seconds. "When you think about show-stopping moments in our canon, that is going to be up there as one of the biggest and best that we've ever seen," Hundgen said. Hundgen was direct about why the land needed more than its headline ride. "We knew the door coaster was the cornerstone of the experience," he said. "It feels like just giving them a coaster would shortchange the experience. So, we embarked on this idea of a theater experience that would really orient our guests to Monsters." The show frames guests as the first humans invited into the monster world, with monsters who are, in his words, a little skittish about it. The production pairs high-definition panels with physical characters, built in collaboration with Pixar and ILM.
The show also carries a piece of Disney music history: a new original song by composer Randy Newman. "It's the first time Randy has ever written something exclusively for a Disney theme park," Hundgen revealed. Newman scored the Monsters, Inc. films, so the voice of Monstropolis will literally be the voice fans already associate with it.

Monstropolis will open with restaurants and shops drawn straight from the films. Harryhausen's, the sushi restaurant where Mike and Celia had their date in the original movie, is being reimagined as a brand-new space. "The menu will be wildly fun," Hundgen said. "Imagine sushi dishes inspired by the monster world: sushi rolls, tempura satays, all with iconic names that feel straight out of the film."
