The Buzz
Sleigh rides are one of the few Walt Disney World holiday experiences away from the parks. Bookings opened this week with limited availability and a rolling 60-day window, so the earliest December dates are the only ones bookable right now.
What a Holiday Sleigh Ride includes this December
Each horse-drawn sleigh winds along the wooded trails of Fort Wilderness for a quiet break from the parks.
- Who fits. A sleigh holds up to four adults, or two adults and three small children.
- Open to all ages. Disney lists the experience for guests of every age.
- Price up $5. The 2022 season charged $75 a ride, so this year's rate is five dollars higher.
- Wheelchair access. Guests who use a wheelchair must step up into the sleigh.
- Rain or cold. Rides go ahead in rain and cold, and only inclement weather cancels them.
Disney does not hand out umbrellas, ponchos or sunscreen, so bring your own. A December evening at Fort Wilderness can be cool once the sun is down.
Getting to Tri-Circle-D Ranch takes longer than you think
Disney advises allowing up to 90 minutes to reach the barn from elsewhere at Walt Disney World.
- Check in early. Arrive at the barn 15 minutes before the reservation time.
- Driving in. Park near the Fort Wilderness main entrance and take the free bus to the Settlement Bus Depot, allowing 60 minutes for that leg.
- Coming from elsewhere. Guests travelling from other parts of Walt Disney World should allow up to 90 minutes.
- The barn itself. Rides leave from the Tri-Circle-D Ranch barn near the Settlement Bus Depot, a rebuilt barn that debuted in 2020.
Disney says the Tri-Circle-D Ranch has housed what it calls The Happiest Horses on Earth since before Walt Disney World opened. The same ranch is home to the horses that pull the Main Street Vehicles' trolley at Magic Kingdom.
Book now for early December; December 30 opens around October 31
Reservations open 60 days ahead on a rolling basis, so most December dates are not bookable yet.
- Where to book. Through Disney's website or the My Disney Experience app.
- Rolling window. As of October 8, the 60-day window reaches about December 7; later dates open one day at a time.
- Walk-ups possible. Same-day reservations and walk-ins are offered on a limited basis when space allows.
- Cancellation charge. Cancelling within 24 hours of the ride, or not showing up, costs the full price.
Our take. Book on the day your date reaches the 60-day mark, since Disney warns availability is limited, and plan the full 90 minutes of travel: a missed check-in still costs the whole $80.
