Tiana's Bayou Adventure is open at Walt Disney World Resort, and the new characters guests meet along the way are not background dressing. The bayou critters are a band, and between them they cover Zydeco, Afro-Cuban and Rara music, three traditions that sit at different points of the Gulf and Caribbean map. Why the music matters to the attraction
The three genres the critters play are as distinct as the characters. Zydeco comes out of Creole Louisiana and runs on accordion and rubboard. Afro-Cuban music brings a separate percussion tradition into the same room. Rara is a Haitian street-procession style built on horns and drums. Casting a band across all three is a choice about what New Orleans actually sounds like, and it gives the ride's score a wider range than a single house style would.
The six critters, and what each one is like
Byhalia the beaver
Byhalia builds musical instruments out of materials she finds in the bayou. Disney frames her as the inventive one and the heartbeat of the group, strong-willed and naturally talented.
Lari the armadillo
Lari is the troublemaker, unpredictable enough that his friends never know the next move, with a story ready for every occasion. He also has a strong conscience, so the mischief resolves.
Timoleon the otter
Timoleon is the explorer with the sharp memory, recalling small details from every trip. The group treats him as the reference library.
Beau the opossum
Beau finds beauty everywhere, including in himself. The optimism reads as rose-colored to some of the others, but it is what generates the group's ideas.
Mayra the frog
Mayra is the ambitious one, with a natural talent she has worked at and enjoys performing. She is the member most comfortable in the spotlight.
Felipe the frog
Felipe is traditional and a little old school, a natural leader and entrepreneur who still knows how to enjoy himself. He puts chosen family first.
