Walt the Dreamer Still Pulls a Crowd at EPCOT, and Dreamers Point Is Why

A bronze Walt, sitting where he can see the park
The statue shows Disney later in life, at the point when he was working out his plans for EPCOT. He is seated rather than standing, on a long curved bench facing the gardens, and the sculpture is at guest eye level instead of on a raised pedestal. Most Walt Disney World visitors know him through Partners at Magic Kingdom, where he stands beside Mickey Mouse with a hand raised toward Main Street. This one sits down, and guests can sit on the same bench.
"The debut of this new space and beautiful statue of Walt contemplating one of his biggest dreams means so much to the transformation and all that EPCOT represents," said Kartika Rodriguez, vice president of EPCOT, at the dedication ceremony.
The gardens the statue looks out over
World Celebration Gardens took the ground between the park entrance and the rest of EPCOT and turned it into greenery, seating and shade. For the outdoor space, Imagineers went back to EPCOT's original design language rather than inventing a new one. The center of the area is a large planter ringed by pavement patterned after EPCOT's flower logo, the one with Earth at its middle surrounded by five linked rings.
"So when you're coming to this space, what we're trying to say visually is that this is the heart of EPCOT," said Daniel Bertin, a project coordinator at Walt Disney Imagineering. "And the heart of EPCOT is about bringing people together and that's what World Celebration is all about."
The gardens were also built to carry festival programming. EPCOT's festival activity had long been concentrated in World Showcase, and the new space was designed to pull kiosks and festival elements forward into the front of the park, giving guests somewhere to sit and eat before they reach the lagoon.
"Being able to bring the whole festival atmosphere into this part of the park is really critical because we know our guests have always loved all the festival activity that happens in World Showcase," Bertin said. "And now we're going to be able to bring that forward into this part of the park as well and give them even more opportunities to relax, enjoy, and do the kiosk, everything they loved about the festival atmosphere but do it up here."
New music, and a nighttime show on the same night
The area opened with new background music written by composer Pinar Toprak, who also scored EPCOT's anthem. Toprak's work carried into the park's nighttime show as well: Luminous The Symphony of Us debuted the same evening the new space opened to guests, giving EPCOT a new score at the front of the park and over World Showcase Lagoon on the same night.
Where it fits in EPCOT's transformation
Dreamers Point and World Celebration Gardens followed the two headline rides of EPCOT's multi-year rebuild. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opened in World Discovery in 2022, and Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana opened in World Nature in 2023. The gardens were the piece that finally cleared the construction walls from the middle of the park, which is why the reaction to them ran differently from the reaction to a new attraction.
The Buzz
Dreamers Point gave EPCOT something the park did not have before: a portrait of Walt Disney on his own, at eye level, in the neighborhood built around the ideas he was chasing at the end of his life. Every Walt Disney World guest already knows the other one, Partners at Magic Kingdom, standing with Mickey Mouse. The contrast between a founder standing on a pedestal and a founder sitting on a bench is what keeps this spot in the conversation, and it is why the plaza behind Spaceship Earth reads as a destination rather than a walkway.
What this means for guests
Dreamers Point sits between Spaceship Earth and the World Celebration Gardens lawn, so most guests pass it twice in a day without planning to. The easier windows for a photo on the bench are early, before the entrance crowd works its way in, and the last hour before the nighttime show pulls people toward World Showcase. The gardens are the practical gain: shade and seating at the front of EPCOT, on ground that spent years behind construction wall, and a second place for festival kiosks when a food event is running.
