Zootopia: Better Zoogether! adds a new pre-show starring Mayor Winddancer

Walt Disney Imagineering has added a new pre-show sequence to Zootopia: Better Zoogether! at Disney's Animal Kingdom, introducing Mayor Brian Winddancer from Zootopia 2. The show's story lead walked through the final overnight rehearsals in the Tree of Life Theater, where audio, lighting, effects and figure animation teams tuned the new sequence before it went live.

Walt Disney Imagineering has added a new pre-show sequence to Zootopia: Better Zoogether! at Disney's Animal Kingdom, and it introduces Mayor Brian Winddancer, the Clydesdale politician voiced by Patrick Warburton in Zootopia 2. The update is the first change to the Tree of Life Theater show since it opened, and Imagineering documented the final overnight rehearsals in a video posted to its own YouTube channel.

A new mayor gets the crowd seated

The update was announced by the show's story lead, who opened the video standing outside the attraction. "What's up party animals? We're out here at Zootopia: Better Zoogether! at Disney's Animal Kingdom to welcome a very special new character to our Together Day celebrations, none other than Zootopia's mayor, Brian Winddancer," the story lead said.

Winddancer does not turn up mid-show. He anchors a sequence that runs before the main presentation, which gives the theater a proper introduction rather than dropping guests straight into the Zoogether Day broadcast. As the story lead put it, the goal was to "welcome our guests and set up the story of our show."

Why Winddancer, and why now

The character's selection follows directly from the sequel. Winddancer is the actor turned politician who takes over Zootopia's city hall in Zootopia 2, and Patrick Warburton voices him in the film. "Mayor Winddancer was such a huge part of Zootopia 2," the story lead said. "We were so excited to get to bring him into our show as part of a brand new pre-show sequence."

Bringing a film character into a park show meant going back to the people who made him. That "also meant getting to work alongside Patrick Warburton, some of the filmmakers and animators with the Walt Disney Animation Studios again, so we can bring this character to life," the story lead said. Imagineering has taken that route with the attraction before, since the theater's existing cast draws on the same films.

Inside the theater on one of the last nights

The rest of the video is a technical rehearsal, shot in the Tree of Life Theater while the work was still unfinished. "So this is actually one of the very last nights in the theater before all the updates go live for the park," the story lead said, walking past crews at work.

That night pulled in most of the show's disciplines at once. According to the story lead, the room held audio teams, lighting teams, the special effects crew and the figure animation team, all "just making sure that all the updates are working the way we want them to and all the timing is lining up." The figure animation reference matters: a new pre-show character in a theater like this one means new animated figure programming, not just a new video file.

The video then cuts to a run of the sequence itself. The audio captured on stage includes the line, "On this special day of celebration we gather to honor our shared connection, remembering today and every day we prove we are better together," followed by a sung passage.

The story lead's verdict after watching the run was brief. "That was awesome. The show is looking great. It's sounding fantastic," the story lead said. "Anytime we get a chance to go in and add a little extra magic or just enhance the guest experience, we're super excited we get to do so."

What the show already had

Zootopia: Better Zoogether! opened at the Tree of Life Theater on November 7, 2025, as a 4D show framed around Zoogether Day, a citywide celebration of Zootopia's biomes. Heidi Howler, a wolf broadcaster created for the attraction, hosts the Zoogether Day LIVE! stream that the theater audience is watching, with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde carrying the story and Gazelle closing the show with a musical finale. The broadcast conceit is what makes a mayoral press appearance an easy fit for the front of the show.

Neither the video nor Disney's own posts about the attraction attach a public date to the pre-show going live, so the only timing detail on the record is the story lead's own: the footage was shot during the final nights of work before the update reached guests.

What this means for Animal Kingdom guests

Anyone who has already seen Better Zoogether! now has a reason to sit through it again, because the change lands before the part they have seen. Guests heading to Animal Kingdom for the first time since Zootopia 2 reached theaters will meet a character from the sequel in the queue portion of the experience rather than only in the main show.
