Walt Disney World's villains have been drafted. Three new football jerseys have arrived at the Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom, each fronted by a different villain, the Headless Horseman, Maleficent and Darth Maul: and each built around the number 71, for the year Walt Disney World opened. All three are $69.99.

Key Details

The Headless Horseman Football Jersey

An indigo jersey carrying the Walt Disney World wordmark in small orange lettering across the center chest, with a large white 71 outlined in orange beneath it. Between the numerals, the Headless Horseman rides forward on his black steed, holding his flaming jack-o'-lantern head aloft.

At the center point of the high V-neck sits a classic Disney "D" on a small purple shield emblem. The short sleeves carry black and purple stripes around the cuffs. On the lower right front is a purple rectangular patch: a spooky black silhouette of Cinderella Castle outlined in bright orange on the left, and on the right the Walt Disney World wordmark above the number 71 and the dedication line.

The back repeats the wordmark across the shoulders in orange at a larger scale, above the same white 71 outlined in orange, with the Horseman's flaming jack-o'-lantern head sitting between the numerals.

Of the three, this is the one most tied to a specific Walt Disney World tradition: the Headless Horseman's pre-parade gallop down Main Street, U.S.A. is one of the signature moments of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

Maleficent Football Jersey

Black, with a small white Walt Disney World wordmark across the center chest above a large dark gray 71 outlined in white. Between the numerals, Maleficent appears in her dragon form, breathing bright green fire.

The V-neck carries a Disney "D" on a small white shield emblem, and the short sleeves have gray stripes around the cuffs. The lower-right patch is gray and white: Maleficent's horned headdress surrounded by green fire on the left, the wordmark, the number 71 and the dedication in gray and white on the right.

The back carries the wordmark in white across the shoulders above a gray 71 detailed with bright green thorned brambles, a nod to the thicket she raises around the castle in Sleeping Beauty.

Darth Maul Football Jersey

Red, with a small white Walt Disney World wordmark across the center chest and a large black 71 outlined in white below. Darth Maul glares out from between the numerals.

The V-neck features a red Disney "D" on a small black shield emblem, and the short sleeves carry black and white stripes at the cuffs. The lower-right patch is black, with a smaller Darth Maul portrait on the left and the wordmark, number and dedication in black, white and red embroidery on the right.

On the back, the wordmark runs across the shoulders in white above a 71 rendered in Darth Maul's red-and-black facial pattern, outlined in white.

The Buzz

Villain merchandise is having a sustained moment at Walt Disney World, with a Disney Villains land under construction at Magic Kingdom and Halloween season already under way. Sports-jersey styling has also become one of the resort's most reliable apparel formats. Putting the two together, with the resort's founding year as the jersey number, is the kind of design detail that gets noticed, and 71 is a number Walt Disney World fans read instantly.

Why 71 Is on Every One of Them

The number is not arbitrary. Walt Disney World Resort opened on October 1, 1971, and 71 has become the resort's shorthand across apparel, pins and collectibles, the equivalent of a founding date stitched into a uniform. Every jersey in this set carries the same dedication on its patch: "Walt Disney World Resort Established 1971 Designed for The Most Magical Place on Earth."

Across the shoulders of the back of the Jersey is the "Walt Disney World" wordmark in orange, a larger version of that on the front. Below sits the same featured "71" in white, outlined in orange. The Headless Horseman's jack-o'-lantern head sits flaming between the numbers.

That is what ties three characters from entirely different corners of the Disney library into one coherent set. The Headless Horseman comes from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty and Darth Maul from Star Wars, but all three are wearing the resort's number.

Find Them at the Emporium for $69.99

All three jerseys were found at The Emporium, the flagship store running along Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom. At $69.99 each they sit in the mid-range of Walt Disney World apparel: above a spirit jersey, below outerwear. With Halloween season under way and the anniversary date on October 1 approaching, the Headless Horseman version in particular is the one most likely to thin out first.
