Welcome, Foolish Gourds: Disney's Pumpkin Pals Tour a Not-So-Scary Party Night

Disney Parks has released a new short film starring pumpkin pals Gourdo, Lil Jack and Slushie, who decide that more friends means more candy and set out to prove it. Their night takes them to the Cadaver Dans in Frontierland, Madame Carlotta and Butler Broome outside the Haunted Mansion, the trick-or-treat trails and the fireworks. It doubles as a tour of what a Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party night actually looks like.

Disney Parks has posted a new short film built around the pumpkin pals, and it hands a whole Halloween party night over to them. Gourdo, Lil Jack and Slushie work out early that more friends means more candy, then set off across Magic Kingdom to test the theory on a barbershop quartet of ghosts, the staff of the Haunted Mansion and every candy bucket they can reach.

More friends equals more candy

The short opens on the three pumpkins watching costumed guests stream past. "It's here! It's pumpkin party time!" one of them yells. The conversation turns almost immediately to the only subject Lil Jack cares about. "Do you think they'd share their candy with me?" he asks. The answer, "Only if you're friends," is all the plan he needs.

"Oh, so more friends equals more candy," he concludes. Gourdo takes charge of the evening from there: "Tonight, we're making friends Gourdo style." What follows is a tour of the party, one stop at a time, with Lil Jack revising his candy arithmetic at every introduction.

Starting off on the right note in Frontierland

The first stop is the Cadaver Dans, the barbershop quartet of ghosts who perform in Frontierland on party nights. Lil Jack goes straight to business: "I heard more friends equals more candy, and there's, um, one two three four of you, so that means four friends equals four candies."

One of the quartet slows him down. "Woah, slow down there, kid. If you want to make friends with the Cadaver Dans, you got to start off on the right note, like this." The group eases into Grim Grinning Ghosts: "When the crypt door creaks and the tombstone quakes, ghouls come out for a swinging wake. Happy haunts materialize." Lil Jack's attempt to harmonise ("I can sing too") gets a scream out of the other pumpkins and a flat "Beautiful, kid" out of the singers.

Then the quartet excuses itself with the best line in the piece: "Well, it was a pleasure, pumpkin pals, but we got to go warm up our pipes. And the warming-up bit's not so easy when you're dead."

Welcome, foolish gourds

Lil Jack heads next for the big house on the hill, on the reasonable theory that a house that size must be well stocked. "Oh, look at this big house," he says. "They got to have lots of candy around here." Waiting outside are Madame Carlotta and Butler Broome, the pair who hold court by the Haunted Mansion on party nights. Broome's greeting supplies the short's title and its best joke, a rewrite of the Mansion's own line: "Welcome, foolish gourds."

Lil Jack keeps his priorities in order. "Well, I am Lil Jack, and, uh, two questions. Will you be my friend, and also, do you have candy?" The hosts disappoint him on the second count. "We don't keep much candy around because it just goes right through us. And we have so many parties where we give away candy to the living and the non-living." He files a claim anyway: "Well, I'll expect my invitation next year."

Parade talk and a headless role model

The invitation he gets is for that night instead. "Actually, if you're looking for an invitation, we are dragging our corpses over to the parade," one of them says, and the group settles in for Mickey's Boo-To-You Halloween Parade.

Madame Carlotta has her own reason for showing up. "It's time for the parade. That's where I meet all my prospective suitors. I mean, there's those pirates and there's so many handsome gentlemen." One pumpkin, watching the waltzing ghosts go by, sighs "I wish I had toes." Asked why: "So I could twirl like that."

The Headless Horseman, who leads the parade off every night, gets the running joke. "What about the best one, the Headless Horse Pumpkin?" one of the pals asks. The reply, "He's just not all there," draws an immediate correction: "Oh, he's all there. He's all there and more." A pumpkin settles the matter for himself: "I'm going to be just like him when I grow up." A parting aside lands the punchline: "Don't worry about Madame Carlotta. Her taste in men isn't all there, either."

Candy, then fireworks

Pointed toward the trick-or-treat trails, Lil Jack finally gets what he came for. "I found you. Finally. More friends. More candy." He works through candy bucket after candy bucket until he is told to get down and moved along for the fireworks.

The close is quieter. "Making friends is sweet," Lil Jack says, and gets an answer that is the whole point of the short: "Parties are always better with friends." Over the top of the fireworks, someone offers "These fireworks sure are something," and Lil Jack, still counting, reckons "I bet I made like a billion million friends." The sign-off is borrowed wholesale from Looney Tunes, "That's all, folks. Have a merry Halloween and a happy New Year," and immediately punctured: "Who are you talking to?"

How much of it is real

Every stop the pumpkins make is on the party's actual schedule. The Cadaver Dans do perform in Frontierland. Mickey's Boo-To-You Halloween Parade is led off by the Headless Horseman and carries the Hitchhiking Ghosts and the spectral Bride from the Haunted Mansion, along with Minnie Mouse, Clarabelle Cow and Daisy Duck costumed as the Sanderson Sisters. The fireworks the short ends on are Disney's Not-So-Spooky Spectacular, hosted by Jack Skellington. Trick-or-treat stops are spread across every land, with teal treat bags and allergy-friendly candy centers for guests with food allergies.

The one thing the short leaves out is the rest of the bill. Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular plays at Cinderella Castle Stage, and this year Stitch hosts a costume-swapping masquerade with Lilo and Angel at Rockettower Plaza Stage while Captain Jack Sparrow runs pirate antics in Adventureland.

Why this matters

The piece is promotion, but it is also a fair map of how a party night is meant to run: find the music, get turned away for candy at the Mansion, catch the parade, work the trails, end on the fireworks.
