Savi's Workshop Has Its Lightsaber Parts Menus Back, Two Weeks After They Started to Crack

·

The printed parts menus are back in guests' hands at Savi's Workshop at Disney's Hollywood Studios, after being pulled in early September when the old ones began to crack. The replacements carry the same four themes and the same parts, with small design changes: the white borders are gone, the logo colours have shifted, and the Aurebesh line reading "Handbuilt Lightsabers" has been dropped. The build is still $274.99.

The printed parts menus are back at Savi's Workshop: Handbuilt Lightsabers at Disney's Hollywood Studios, roughly two weeks after they were pulled from the experience. The old ones had started to crack, and the replacements that have taken their place carry the same four themes and the same parts, with a handful of small design changes that only a repeat builder would spot.

What is different about the new menus

The information is unchanged: the same four lightsaber themes, the same hilt parts under each one. The differences are in the printing. The previous menus carried white borders, slightly different colours in the logos on the back, and an extra line of Aurebesh across the bottom reading "Handbuilt Lightsabers." All three of those are gone from the new version.

Aurebesh is the written alphabet of the Star Wars galaxy, and it is the typographic glue that holds Black Spire Outpost together: it is on the signage, the menus, the merchandise tags and the trash cans throughout the land. Dropping a line of it from a prop menu is a small thing, but it is the kind of small thing the people who book a $274.99 build tend to notice.

There is one caveat from the workshop floor: cast members have said the menus might not be out all day. Whatever the new stock is made of, it is not yet being treated as something that survives a full day of handling by every group that comes through.

The four lightsaber themes, and what each one means

Every guest building at Savi's picks one of four themes first, and that choice determines the array of hilt parts they are then allowed to select from. The themes are the in-world framing for what is, mechanically, four different parts bins:

After the hilt comes the blade colour, chosen from a kyber crystal in blue, green, purple or red. Additional accessories and crystals are sold separately. The land's antiquities shop, Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities, is where most of that trade happens.

Key Details

If the menus are away, the drawers do the job

This is the practical part, and it is worth knowing before you walk in. When the parts menus are not out, guests can still choose their theme by looking at the "scrap metal" parts in a set of drawers in the workshop. The drawers hold the real thing rather than a photograph of it, which is arguably the better way to choose in the first place: you are picking a hilt you will be holding for the next fifteen years, and finish and weight read differently in the hand than they do on a printed card.

What the menus add is speed and certainty. Savi's runs on a tight schedule, with groups moving through a guided ceremony, and being handed a card that lays out every part in your chosen theme is considerably faster than working it out from a drawer while the room waits. That is why their absence registered at all: nothing about the experience stopped working in early September, it just got slower and slightly more improvised.

The Buzz

Savi's Workshop is one of the highest-priced single purchases a guest can make inside a Walt Disney World theme park, and it is sold almost entirely on atmosphere: the room, the ceremony, the props. When a piece of that kit disappears, the gap is obvious to anyone who has done it before or watched it on video, which is why a set of printed cards became a story at all. The return also answers the question the removal raised: Disney was replacing the menus, not retiring them.

$274.99 still buys the build, and the crack question is unanswered

Nothing about the experience itself has changed. It is still $274.99, still four themes, still four crystal colours in the box, and still the same guided build in the back room of a scrap dealer's shop in Black Spire Outpost, the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land that opened at Disney's Hollywood Studios in August 2019. Reservations remain the sensible approach; walk-up availability at Savi's is not something to count on.

The open question is durability. Disney has not said what the new menus are made of or whether the redesign addresses the cracking that took the last set out of service, and the warning that they may not be out all day suggests the answer is not yet settled. If you are building a saber in the next few weeks, plan for the drawers as the backup and treat the menu as a bonus.
