Disney says it is bringing the Expedition Everest Yeti back to life
After nearly two decades frozen in place, the Yeti inside Expedition Everest is getting fixed. Disney confirmed the news at D23 with a comedy video in which park characters audition to replace the animatronic before Imagineering lands on the obvious answer: "How about we just fix the Yeti?"
The most famous broken animatronic in any Disney park is finally getting repaired. At the D23 Experiences showcase, Disney confirmed it is "bringing the Yeti back to life inside Expedition Everest" at Disney's Animal Kingdom, ending a saga that has run since the figure's full motion was switched off shortly after the coaster opened in 2006.

The audition video
Disney Parks announced the news with a mockumentary-style video framed as a casting call. "There was no shortage of interest to audition for the Yeti," the channel joked, as a parade of park characters tried out for the role. The judges reject each one in turn: one hopeful is "definitely not hairy enough," another is "too sweet," a green contender is dismissed with "nah, he's too green," and one gets the flat verdict "it's just the wrong IP." Even Sunny Eclipse, the lounge-singer animatronic from Magic Kingdom's Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe, makes an appearance, introducing himself as "Sunny Eclipse, bringing you the sunny side of entertainment," while a judge stage-whispers, "I heard the Cosmic Ray says that he's a real diva."
The bit resolves with the line fans have waited 20 years to hear. "How about we just fix the Yeti?" one voice asks. The reply: "That totally works for me." "Finally." "You got it. We are on it."
Why the Yeti has been still for so long
The Yeti is one of the largest and most complex audio-animatronic figures Disney has ever built. Not long after Expedition Everest opened, stress on its foundation forced Disney to disable its aggressive lunging motion, and the figure has stood in "B mode" ever since, lit by a strobe to suggest movement. Fixing it has been discussed publicly for years, including by Imagineering executives, but this is the first formal commitment to restore the figure.
