A Nighttime Spectacular Built Around Friendship
Debuting as the centerpiece of the resort’s first-ever Pixar Summer Fest, “Pixar Pals Spectacular” is billed as far more than a castle projection show. Members of the Disney Live Entertainment team — Creative Director Christie Evangelisto, Show Director Matt Coombes, and Producer Laetitia Lee — designed it as an emotional journey through the connections that define Pixar’s characters.
The show opens with the instantly recognizable Pixar Lamp and Ball rising over the park through synchronized drone choreography before sweeping guests into one beloved story after another: Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, Mike and Sulley from Monsters, Inc., Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars, Carl and Russell from Up, and Marlin and Dory from Finding Nemo, among many others.
“Friendship is a theme that runs throughout all our lives, from our very earliest memories through our formative years into adulthood, where our friends shape who we are,” Coombes said. “We had a lot of fun discussing the friendships from the Pixar canon that would resonate the most with our guests, as well as those moments which had the most emotional weight.”
That emotional arc carries guests from the playful early days of friendship in Toy Story to the more tender beats of WALL·E, Inside Out, and Turning Red.
Transforming the Castle and Main Street, U.S.A.
One of the show’s boldest choices is its sheer scale. Rather than confining the action to the castle, the creative team turned both the Castle of Magical Dreams and the entirety of Main Street, U.S.A. into a single storytelling canvas. Doors from Monsters, Inc. swing open along the street, waves from Finding Nemo ripple across the buildings, the balloon-filled skies of Up drift overhead, and the high-octane energy of Cars races through the park.
The team looked to the films themselves for its visual language. “We leaned into the art of Pixar as our inspiration to allow us to transform the architecture in a fun and surprising way,” Coombes explained, pointing to the studio’s end-credit sequences as a key source of inspiration for the projections and animations. The result is a show that keeps evolving from beginning to end, rewarding guests with fresh moments of discovery throughout.
Where Technology Serves the Story
At Disney Live Entertainment, the technology is meant to serve the narrative rather than the other way around, and “Pixar Pals Spectacular” leans on nearly every tool in the kit — projection mapping, lighting, fountains, lasers, drones, inflatable character figures, and original arrangements of classic Pixar music — woven into one seamless experience.
Producer Laetitia Lee described the process as building a shared visual language across every medium. “The focus was on layering imagery, movement, and rhythm into one cohesive canvas, ensuring every discipline contributes to a single, immersive experience,” she said. A standout sequence built around The Incredibles pulls projections, drones, lasers, lighting, and fountains together to drop guests into the middle of the action, while overhead the drones form larger-than-life icons — the Pixar Lamp and Ball, the balloon house from Up, and memory-inspired imagery from Inside Out.
Bridging Generations of Pixar Fans
For the creative team, the goal was to make the show resonate with guests of every age. “What makes Pixar storytelling so timeless is that it always speaks directly to the human experience,” Evangelisto said. “No matter your age, culture, or background, you see your own self reflected in their stories and characters.”
That philosophy shapes the lineup, which pairs classics like Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. with newer favorites such as Turning Red and Inside Out. Eagle-eyed fans will even spot characters from Toy Story 5, the latest Pixar release currently in theaters, woven into the show.
“The most rewarding part has been bridging generations,” Lee said. “Seeing characters from Toy Story or Up coexist seamlessly with Turning Red and Inside Out creates a shared emotional experience across ages.”
The finale gathers those friendships into a crescendo of lights, music, projections, drones, fountains, and surprise character inflatables that stretch the length of Main Street, U.S.A. “We hope for guests to see themselves in the stories playing on the castle and along Main Street, U.S.A.,” Coombes said. “We hope they can find connection and representation in the incredible volume of stories and characters featured in the show.”
What This Means for Disney Fans
