Walt Disney Imagineering's Free-Roaming Olaf Robot Steals the Show at NVIDIA GTC
Ahead of his Disneyland Paris debut, Disney Imagineering's self-walking Olaf robotic character appeared at NVIDIA's GTC conference, showcasing the groundbreaking technology behind autonomous character interactions.

Move over, Audio-Animatronics — there's a new kind of Disney magic in town. Walt Disney Imagineering's free-roaming Olaf robotic character made a splash at NVIDIA's GTC conference ahead of his guest-facing debut at World of Frozen in Disneyland Paris on March 29.
The Technology
Kyle Laughlin, SVP of Research & Development at Walt Disney Imagineering, shared details about the technical challenges of bringing Olaf to life as a self-walking, autonomous character. "He is such a unique character — he is made of snow, moves in non-physical ways, and he has a personality that's larger than life," Laughlin explained. Making a robot that captures all of that while safely navigating real-world environments among guests is no small feat.
Why It Matters
This represents a major leap forward in theme park character technology. Unlike stationary Audio-Animatronics or costumed performers, this Olaf can walk freely through World of Frozen, interacting with guests in an organic, unscripted way. It's the kind of technological breakthrough that could reshape how Disney characters exist in their theme parks for decades to come.
Guests visiting Disney Adventure World at Disneyland Paris starting March 29 will be among the first to encounter Olaf in this revolutionary new form.
