Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has arrived — its first teaser trailer and poster are here, and the full cast for the new animated series is officially confirmed. The show premieres on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, and it promises to be unlike anything the galaxy has seen before.

The Setup: Maul, Crime Syndicates, and a Planet the Empire Forgot
Picking up after Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the series follows Maul as he plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on Janix — a city-planet tucked inside a crater that has, so far, been left untouched by Emperor Palpatine's expanding Empire. Cast aside by his Sith Master Darth Sidious and forged by the fire of the Clone Wars, this is a Maul hunting power, revenge, and an apprentice on his own terms.
On Janix he crosses paths with Devon Izara, a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who survived Order 66 and may be exactly the ally — or pawn — Maul has been searching for. Lurking in the shadows are the Inquisitorius, consolidating the Empire's grip on the Outer Rim, one Force user at a time.

Welcome to Janix

Executive Producer Matt Michnovetz describes Janix as "one part Gotham, one part Metropolis and a hundred percent Star Wars." The city is built into a crater on an Empire-free planet with a functioning democracy and peaceful crime syndicate accords — ripe for someone like Maul to upend everything. The visual approach is deliberately gritty, combining stylized animation with old-school practical techniques: cinematographer Joel Aron painted brushstrokes on physical glass and created matte paintings on canvas, lending the show a uniquely tactile, painterly quality.

Darth No More — A New Side of Maul

The trailer hints at a Maul the galaxy hasn't really seen before: one who sits for tea ceremonies, who contemplates rather than just destroys. Sam Witwer — who has voiced Maul since The Clone Wars — even attended an actual Japanese tea ceremony to inform his performance for one particular scene. Supervising Director Brad Rau says they've been "surprised at the new facets we're finding in Maul on this show."
"This show is highly serialized, very connected all the way through." — Executive Producer Brad Rau
"We wanted to create an action-packed thrill ride, something that had the rush of a roller coaster — homages to the classic serials that gave George Lucas the inspiration for Star Wars." — Executive Producer Matt Michnovetz

What This Means for Star Wars Fans
Maul's story has always been one of Star Wars' richest veins — from his shocking defeat in The Phantom Menace to his complex resurrection across The Clone Wars and Rebels. Giving him a full serialized series set in the grimy underworld of the early Empire era is a genuinely exciting proposition. With Dave Filoni's creative fingerprints all over it and a world-class voice cast, Maul – Shadow Lord looks like one of the most ambitious animated Star Wars stories yet. The premiere is here — don't miss it.
