Marvel Comics is shaking up Earth's Mightiest Heroes this August. Marvel Comics is reshaping the Avengers roster this summer in AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON #3, the August chapter of Chip Zdarsky's five-issue event that hands Wolverine the rallying cry to assemble Earth's Mightiest Heroes — while a parallel arc in CAPTAIN AMERICA #14 sends Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom into an unholy alliance against Mephisto.

Avengers: Armageddon — Marvel's Biggest Roster Shake-Up Since Disassembled

The five-issue event series AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON launches in June from superstar writer Chip Zdarsky with art by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar. Marvel is positioning the saga as the team's biggest roster reset since 2004's Avengers: Disassembled — a reference point that should raise eyebrows for longtime readers, given how dramatically that storyline reshaped the franchise.

The plot kicks off when the Avengers assemble to stop Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross — a.k.a. Red Hulk — from igniting a global conflict following his takeover of Latveria. With Doom's homeland in Ross's hands, the geopolitical fallout pushes the team into an impossible position: stand down, or fight a Hulk who keeps growing more unstoppable.

Issue #3 is where the floor falls out. Civilians riot, villains rise, and heroes fall as the entire globe is thrown into chaos. With the rest of the world turning against the Avengers, the team has to decide whether to stand down or keep swinging at Red Hulk — even as he becomes more unbeatable. And when an unstable new power takes center stage, Wolverine sends out the call: Avengers Assemble.

The setup has been bubbling for months. Zdarsky's hit run on Captain America (2025) and the limited series Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon (2026) have been laying the groundwork — the latter following Wolverine and Dave Colton, the new Captain America introduced in Zdarsky's run, as they team up to dismantle an all-new super soldier program. Along the way, they unleash a mysterious power from another universe that will tip the scales of the coming battle with Ross — at a cost.

Captain America #14: Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom vs. Mephisto

Running in parallel to the main event is the next arc of Captain America (2025), serving as a companion story. CAPTAIN AMERICA #14 is written by Zdarsky with art by Ton Lima, and it places Steve Rogers in one of the most unlikely team-ups of his career.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #14

Desperate to return to Earth and stop Armageddon, Captain America teams with Doctor Doom to acquire a weapon powerful enough to defeat their captor: Mephisto. Bound together in an unfamiliar war zone, Steve and Victor Von Doom hunt the Antidivine — a sword potent enough to destroy the Lord of Lies. But they're not the only ones after it. Someone else has eyes on the weapon, and the question becomes whether Steve can stop Doom's first love from destroying Victor as his own soul hangs in the balance.

The Bigger Picture: A New Era for Earth's Mightiest Heroes

Issue #3's tease — Wolverine assembling a new lineup of Avengers — is the headline. Marvel hasn't confirmed the full post-Armageddon roster, but the symbolism of Logan being the one to issue the rallying cry tracks with his current high-profile arcs across Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon and the broader event setup.

Zdarsky has built a reputation over the past several years as one of the publisher's most reliable architects of long-form character drama (his runs on Daredevil and Batman are widely cited as modern standouts), and Marvel positioning him as the lead voice on both Captain America and Avengers: Armageddon signals that this isn't a one-off summer event — it's a launchpad.

Where to Read

Both issues are available at local comic book shops in August. Marvel notes that fans can also pick up ARMAGEDDON/X-MEN #1 CGD 2026 at participating shops for a special prelude story, and stay tuned for more Armageddon news in the weeks ahead. Digital readers can find these comics on the Marvel Unlimited app, which offers access to a catalog of more than 30,000 issues spanning Marvel Comics history.
