Wave Champion Spotlight: New Science Hydrokinetic Hero Joins Marvel Contest of Champions
Pearl Pangan dives into the Battlerealm as Wave, a Science-class champion built around Heavy Attacks, the brand-new Battered debuff, and the dash-through-Specials Untouchable Wave mechanic. Released May 3, 2026, she debuts with a 4.5 Damage rating and powerful synergies with Namor, Attuma, and Kitty Pryde.

A new wave is crashing into Marvel Contest of Champions. Kabam has unveiled Wave, the Filipina hydrokinetic hero Pearl Pangan, as the newest Science-class champion to enter the Battlerealm. Launching May 3, 2026, she arrives with one of the most distinctive offensive kits in recent memory: a Heavy Attack-driven playstyle, a debut Battered Debuff that scales with her attack, and a signature "Untouchable Wave" dash that lets her surf through opponents' Special Attacks.
Wave at a Glance
- Released: May 3, 2026
- Class: Science
- Real Name: Pearl Pangan
- Origin: Cebu, Philippines
- Role: Offense / Heavy Attack damage dealer
- Signature Ability: Hydrotherapy (Regen on Poison/Incinerate expiration)
About Wave: From Cebu Swimmer to Filipino Super Hero
Pearl Pangan is a champion swimmer from Cebu, Philippines, whose career took a fantastical turn when she volunteered for a research study on elite swimmers. A raid on the facility unleashed her latent power of hydrokinesis — the ability to manipulate water at will. Now operating as the Philippines' first Super Hero, Wave channels rivers, oceans, and even moisture in the air into a personal weapon, taking the fight to anyone who would harm the innocent.
For Marvel fans, this brings a relatively under-explored corner of the publisher's library to one of its most-played mobile games. Wave first appeared in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas (2026) as part of writer Greg Pak's effort to spotlight a new generation of Asian and Pacific Islander Super Heroes. Her arrival in Marvel Contest of Champions marks one of the few times she's been adapted outside of the comics page.
Champion Attributes and Class Role
Wave's profile leans hard on offense, with a respectable survivability ceiling thanks to her signature regeneration. Her published attribute spread reads as a glass-cannon-leaning attacker rather than a defender:
Attribute Ratings (out of 5)
- Damage: 4.5
- Survivability: 3.5
- Ease of Use: 3.5
- Utility: 3
- Defender Strength: 1
Wave's basic ability list covers Poison and Incinerate duration resistance, Untouchable, the new Battered Debuff, Debilitate, Physical Vulnerability, Tracking, Fury, and Regeneration. The combination signals a champion built for sustained offense in long fights, where her ramp-up tools have time to compound.
Wave's Mechanics: Heavy Attacks, Battered, and the Flow State
Kabam's developer notes describe Wave as a champion who rewards rhythm. She is primarily focused on offense, leaning heavily into her Heavy Attack and the new Battered Debuff. Mastering her means learning to interrupt basic combos with charged Heavies, time dashes during opponents' Special Attacks, and stack debuffs in the right order before unloading.
Attacker Summary
- Charge a Heavy Attack mid-way through a combo to Stun the opponent. The 4th hit in any combo, including Heavy, inflicts Debilitate.
- Heavy Attacks inflict Physical Vulnerability and ready an Untouchable Wave.
- Untouchable Wave lets her dash forward during the opponent's Special Attack, gaining Untouchable status and inflicting Tracking.
- Punishing a Special grants a +300% Heavy Proficiency.
- Special 2 and Special 3 inflict Battered, paused during Special Attacks.
- Special 1 grants Furies.
Defender Summary
- Wave reduces the duration of Incinerates and Poisons.
- Awakened: Wave gains a Regeneration when a Poison or Incinerate ends. Includes Degeneration against Mystics.
Stats below are based on an Ascended Rank 5, Level 65, Sig 200, 6-Star Champion.
Full Ability Breakdown
Always Active
- Utilizing her power over water, Wave can dilute Poisons and snuff out Incinerates, reducing their duration by 75%. Her Regeneration Rate cannot be reduced by Poison.
- Wave's personal Debuffs are all paused if either champion hasn't landed a hit for 2 seconds.
"A bunch of Wave's Debuffs have some shorter durations, but this pause can really extend a lot of them as you avoid Special Attacks, as long as you aren't getting hit!" — Dev Notes
Furystyle
- When Wave Intercepts or causes an attack to Miss, she gains a +605 Fury Passive for 5 seconds. Max stacks: 3.
- When Wave avoids a hit with the Dexterity Mastery, she gains one of these Furies instead of a Precision Buff.
Heavy Medley
- Wave can charge a Heavy Attack after a non-Combo-Ending Attack to passively Stun the opponent for 0.75 seconds.
- The 4th hit of a Basic Attack combo, including Heavy Attacks, inflicts a 25% Debilitate Debuff for 8 seconds. Max stacks: 4.
- The first hit of a Heavy Attack inflicts a 250 Physical Vulnerability Debuff for 8 seconds. Max stacks: 4.
- Punishing a Special Attack grants a non-stacking +18,150 Heavy Proficiency Passive until the final hit of Wave's Heavy Attack. While active, her Heavies cannot critically hit.
"Debilitates make a big difference for Debuff up time, especially helpful for making the most of her Battered effect from her Specials. Depending on your opponent, you'll want to find the right timing for interrupting your basic hit combos with a Heavy Attack." — Dev Notes
Untouchable Wave
- Heavy Attacks ready an Untouchable Wave.
- Untouchable Wave allows Wave to dash towards the opponent during their Special Attacks in a rushing wave of water, becoming passively Untouchable until shortly after she starts an attack. If this causes a Miss, Untouchable Wave is unreadied.
- Untouchable Wave inflicts a Tracking Debuff for 4 seconds, also inflicted at the start of each fight.
"This ability allows Wave to dash through projectile attacks during the Opponent's Special, creating openings when there wasn't one previously. Learning that timing makes a big difference for mastering Wave." — Dev Notes
Kabam's official preview video walks through the Untouchable Wave mechanic in action:
Wave's Special Attacks
Special Attack 1 — Eskrimador
- Each hit inflicts one of Wave's Debilitates and Physical Vulnerabilities.
- During this attack, Wave gains a +605 Fury Passive for each Debuff on the opponent.
"This can be used early on to get easy Debilitate and Physical Vulnerability stacks, but it really shines when it is used against a Battered Opponent." — Dev Notes
Special Attack 2 — Overpowering Wave
- On hit, inflict a non-stacking 2,420 Battered Debuff for 3.5 seconds if one is not already active. It is paused during Specials and Strikers, and remains paused until Wave or her opponent land a hit.
"Battered is a new effect that deals a flat amount of damage on every hit, but that damage is increased with Wave's Attack Damage. Hitting a Battered Opponent while Wave has Heavy Proficiency or Fury active can result in some big damage." — Dev Notes
Special Attack 3 — Queen of the Seven Seas
- Gain a stack of Paruparo (max 2).
- Each stack of Paruparo increases the max stacks of Wave's Physical Vulnerabilities and Debilitates by 2, and increases the potency of her Battered by 25%.
- Inflicts Wave's Battered Debuff.
"This attack is best used at the start of a fight when the fight will go on longer, allowing Wave to ramp up as she finds the flow of a fight." — Dev Notes
Signature Ability — Hydrotherapy
- When a non-Instant Poison or Incinerate on Wave expires, gain a Regeneration Passive healing 70% of the damage taken from those effects over 4 seconds. Against Mystic opponents, this includes Degeneration.
- Wave's Debilitate, Tracking, and Battered Debuffs become Severe against Mystic opponents.
Synergy Bonuses
Splash Attack — Unique (3-Star+)
With Namor and Attuma:
- Synergy Champions: Every hit includes a splash attack, which does nothing on its own. Every 20 hits in the Combo Meter causes the next 2-3 hits to thrash, dealing an additional 120% of Attack Rating as a burst of Physical Damage.
Untouchable Heavy — Unique (6-Star+)
With Tigra, Morbius, and Kitty Pryde:
- Synergy Champions: Charging Heavy outside of Specials grants an Untouchable Passive for 1 second, paused while charging or until an attack Misses. If it causes a Miss, it goes on cooldown for 30 seconds.
- Kitty Pryde: The first Miss counts as if it was caused by Kitty's Phase.
- Morbius: If this causes a Miss, Morbius' Heavy Attack gains the benefits of a Psionic Glide Medium Attack.
Medley Relay — Unique (4-Star+)
With Quicksilver, Toad, and Pixie:
- Synergy Champions: Backing up to the left wall begins a 30-second timer. If the opponent hits the right wall within that time, gain a +50% Fury Passive for 20 seconds. The timer cannot restart until it has failed or the Fury has ended.
Water Joins Us (2-Star+)
With Lady Deathstrike, Silver Samurai, and Mister Negative:
- All Champions gain 2% Attack Rating.
Teammates (2-Star+)
With Silk, Shang-Chi, and Spider-Man (Classic):
- All Champions gain +3% Perfect Block Chance.
Recommended Masteries, Stat Focus, and Relics
Liquid Courage and Willpower
Because Liquid Courage is indefinite, Wave's resistance does not lower its duration — but because it's a Debuff and she prevents the healing reduction from it, the Willpower mastery works well to mitigate the damage.
Recovery
Against opponents who deal Incinerates or Poisons, or Mystics that will Degenerate Wave, the Recovery mastery is a strong pairing with her Hydrotherapy signature ability.
Inequity and Despair
Wave can inflict a lot of Debuffs, so masteries that further reward stacked Debuffs are excellent picks.
Offensive Stat Focus: Armor Penetration
Because Battered ignores critical hits, and her highest-damage attack is a Heavy Proficiency-enhanced Heavy that can't crit, Wave benefits more than most champions from non-crit stat focuses such as Armor Penetration.
Recommended Battlecast / Relic: Hulk
Her combo-interrupting Stuns, signature-ability regen, and Battered effect all synergize cleanly with the Hulk Relic, making it the standout choice on launch.
What Wave Means for the Battlerealm Meta
Wave's arrival is significant on two fronts. First, the introduction of the Battered debuff opens a new design lane for Kabam — one that scales flat damage with attack rating, sidestepping the critical-hit ecosystem that dominates most damage dealers. Expect future champions and synergies to interact with Battered going forward. Second, Untouchable Wave gives Science-class players a long-asked-for tool: a way to shrug off projectile-heavy Specials without relying on Dexterity timing alone.
For mid-tier and end-game players, her Mystic-killer signature ability and her synergies with Atlantean and X-Men favorites make her an immediate Day-1 pull priority — particularly if you already run Namor, Kitty Pryde, or Shang-Chi in your roster. New players should be aware that her ramp-up curve is real; she's a champion who needs a few seconds of fight before she finds her flow, but once she does, the damage numbers are substantial.
Wave is available now in Marvel Contest of Champions on iOS and Android. Look for her in featured crystals, the Champion Spotlight events, and standard 6-star pulls.
