Norman Osborn Trains Spider-Heroes in New Spider-Versity Series

Class is in session this April as Marvel Comics launches AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: SPIDER-VERSITY, a new five-issue limited series that brings the entire Spider-Family together under two very unlikely mentors: Norman Osborn and Spider-Woman.

Written by Jordan Morris (Predator: Bloodshed) and Joe Kelly (Amazing Spider-Man) with art by Pere Pérez (Amazing Spider-Man: Torn), the series assembles an impressive roster of Spider-Heroes—Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Silk, Araña, Spider-Boy, and Spider-Girl—and trains them for a threat unlike any other: the Green Goblin himself.

Norman Osborn's Redemption Arc Continues

Norman Osborn has been on a complicated redemption journey over the past few years in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, and Spider-Versity picks up that thread. Haunted by fear that the Goblin could return at any moment, Norman's motive for setting up the other Spider-Heroes with a training facility is making sure they are equipped to deal with him if he ever breaks bad again.

"When I came on Amazing Spider-Man, Norman had been 'expunged of his sins' and really wanted to make the best of a 'clean start,' but is that even possible? Norman's done a lot of bad, some under the influence of the Goblin Serum, some just because he's egotistical, quick to anger, impatient, and deeply, deeply damaged as a human," Joe Kelly explained.

Spider-Woman Keeps a Watchful Eye

Jessica Drew—Spider-Woman—joins Norman as co-mentor with very reasonable concerns about his stability. "Jess has the (very reasonable) concern that Norman could go Goblin-mode at any moment," Jordan Morris explained. "She agrees the Spider-Heroes could be a killer team on par with the Avengers or X-Men, so she sees the benefit of this training program, but is always keeping an eye on Norman. As we see in the first issue, she won't hesitate to break out her most brutal moves if she thinks things are going sideways."

The young Spider-Heroes each react differently to having a reformed villain as their mentor. Gwen Stacy carries the heaviest baggage with the Green Goblin and is most skeptical. Miles Morales follows Peter's lead and tries to see the best in Norman. The youngest heroes, Spider-Girl and Spider-Boy, are thrilled to play with the "big kids," while Silk uses the university training center to live the college experience she never had.
