Issue #11 closed with Steve Rogers stepping between civilians and a rampaging Red Hulk, taking damage that left his mortal body in a coma. Issue #12 picks up with his consciousness in Hell — and waiting for him there is Victor Von Doom. The image of a comatose Captain America forced to navigate the underworld marks a hard tonal pivot for Zdarsky's run, which has so far balanced political thriller beats with classic Avengers action.

Doctor Doom's Plan Against Mephisto

The setup leans on the threads left over from One World Under Doom (2025), in which the Latverian monarch briefly ruled the planet before Earth's Mightiest Heroes deposed him. Doom didn't disappear quietly — he descended into Hell to plot a campaign against its sitting overlord, Mephisto. With Captain America now stranded in Doom's territory, the once-Sorcerer Supreme finds himself with a willing champion for the war he's been preparing.

Zdarsky frames the descent as a natural escalation rather than a detour. "When I was laying out the larger story, Hell seemed like the logical next step. I think people will see the reasoning shortly and how it ties into the themes we've been developing for Steve," he tells Marvel.com. "[It] feels very black and white, but it's not necessarily the case here, especially through the eyes of a man who most definitely doesn't belong there."

Avengers Assemble in Avengers: Armageddon #1

Back on Earth, the world reacts to a comatose Captain America the way it usually does — with chaos. "Armageddon," is Zdarsky's one-word summary. While Steve and Doom navigate Hell, the Avengers regroup to avenge their fallen friend and end up on a collision course with the Red Hulk in the launch issue of Avengers: Armageddon #1, kicking off a summer-long event that Marvel says will reshape the Avengers status quo heading into the next era.
