Winterspell Release Notes: Major Rules Overhaul and the Underdog Keyword
Disney Lorcana's Winterspell set launches with Comprehensive Rules 2.0, a complete overhaul that changes the empty deck loss condition and clarifies turn action ordering. The set also introduces the Underdog keyword, giving second-player advantages, alongside detailed card-specific rulings for key new characters.

Disney Lorcana TCG's eleventh expansion, Winterspell, arrives with sweeping rules changes, a brand-new keyword ability, and several quality-of-life updates that will reshape how Illumineers play the game.
Comprehensive Rules 2.0
The biggest news in this release is a complete overhaul of the Comprehensive Rules document. The internal rules team spent the past year performing a top-to-bottom review, streamlining language and making the document more accessible to players, judges, and content creators alike.
Among the headline changes:
- Empty deck rule reworked — Previously, attempting to draw from an empty deck meant an instant loss. Now, players lose only if they end their turn with no cards in their deck, giving them one last chance to close out the game.
- Turn action ordering clarified — Processes like challenging are now broken into clearly defined steps, removing ambiguity during competitive play.
- Card and effect resolution detailed — A brand-new rules section walks through step-by-step how cards and effects resolve, formalizing what was previously implicit.
New Keyword: Underdog
Going second has never felt this good. Winterspell introduces the Underdog keyword, designed to offset the natural advantage of going first. Each Underdog character costs 2 ink and can be played for 1 ink less on your very first turn — but only if you're not the starting player.
Angel – Siren Singer is the Amber Underdog, a 2/2/1 Storyborn Ally with Singer 3 who drops to just 1 ink when you go second. Every ink type receives its own Underdog character in the set.
Card-Specific Notes
The release notes also spotlight several cards with nuanced interactions that players should be aware of heading into Winterspell's launch.
Elisa Maza – Transformed Gargoyle is a 3-cost Ruby character whose Forever Strong ability prevents your characters' Strength from being reduced below their printed values. Her Stone by Day restriction means she can't ready if you have 3 or more cards in hand — rewarding aggressive, low-hand strategies.
Anna – Soothing Sister is a 5-cost Amethyst Floodborn with a unique Shift condition — she gains Shift 0 if a card left any player's discard that turn. Her Warm Heart ability lets you gain lore equal to a character card's Lore value in your discard when she quests. Flynn Rider – His Own Biggest Fan pairs interestingly with Anna: his 4 Lore only gets reduced by opponents' hand sizes while he's in play, so grabbing him from the discard with Anna nets the full value.
Grandmother Willow – Ancient Advisor offers a persistent 1-ink discount on the next character you play each turn, though players should note the discount applies automatically — there's no "may" clause. Lilo – Bundled Up prevents the first instance of damage she'd take during each opponent's turn, making her a resilient early-game defender.
Mickey Mouse – Bob Cratchit stashes cards from your deck facedown beneath him when he quests, and his A Giving Heart ability lets you redistribute those cards to another character or location when he's banished. Colors of the Wind is a 4-cost Amethyst Song that has each player reveal their top card, then lets you draw one card for each different ink type revealed — rewarding diverse builds.
