Inside Winterspell's Design: New Draft Rules and Franchise Deckbuilding
Lead designer Lukas Litzsinger reveals the new set construction template behind Disney Lorcana's Winterspell. Key changes include a reduced 35-card draft minimum and franchise-driven mechanical themes for Darkwing Duck, Mickey's Christmas Carol, Fox & the Hound, Lilo & Stitch, and Frozen.

Lead game designer Lukas Litzsinger has pulled back the curtain on Winterspell's design philosophy, revealing a new set construction template that transforms both limited play and thematic deckbuilding for Disney Lorcana TCG.
A New Template for Limited Play
Starting with Whispers in the Well, the design team adopted a new set construction template that breaks each expansion into featured themes and franchises while carefully monitoring interaction density at lower rarities. The result is a more engaging draft experience with better gameplay at common and uncommon levels.
In another significant change, Winterspell introduces a new draft rule: deck minimums drop from 40 cards to 35. This gives drafters more control over their deck's quality and consistency, letting them cut weaker picks more aggressively.
Franchise-Driven Deckbuilding Hooks
The new template also caters to players who love building around specific Disney franchises. Each featured franchise in Winterspell has distinct mechanical identity:
- Darkwing Duck — Primarily Sapphire/Steel. Darkwing glimmers focus on gadgets and protecting St. Canard from villains.
- Mickey's Christmas Carol — Primarily Emerald/Sapphire. Characters work together to tell a cohesive story through gameplay mechanics.
- Fox & the Hound — Primarily Emerald. These cards reward evasive characters and dodging hunters.
- Lilo & Stitch — Primarily Amber/Steel. As a returning franchise, it carries forward established mechanical themes with new additions.
- Frozen — Primarily Amethyst/Ruby. This returning franchise drives the Winterspell storyline, with Elsa discovering a mysterious enchanted book.
Litzsinger emphasized that the team doesn't want to be too prescriptive — the strongest decks won't be handed to players on a silver platter. Instead, Winterspell provides clear starting points for themed builds while leaving plenty of room for creative deckbuilding and cross-franchise synergies.
