Inside High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+
Creator Tim Federle and the cast of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series share how they assembled a team of real teenagers, rediscovered original props, and filmed at the iconic East High in Salt Lake City. The Disney+ launch-day series debuts November 12, with episode one airing early on Disney Channel, ABC, and Freeform on November 8.

The Wildcats are back, and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is getting ready to bop to the top of Disney+ watchlists when the streaming service debuts on November 12, 2019. Creator Tim Federle and his young cast pulled back the curtain on casting, the original music, and a treasure trove of Easter eggs hiding on the series' real-life high school set.
Casting Real Teenagers for a New Wildcats Era
When Federle started casting the mockumentary-style series, he had one rule: real teenagers only. After combing through hundreds of audition tapes, he assembled a dream team that includes Olivia Rodrigo as protagonist Nini, Sofia Wylie as dancer and fashionista Gina, and Larry Saperstein as fan-favorite Big Red. Several cast members bring Disney Channel pedigrees from shows like Bizaardvark and Andi Mack.
For the young stars, the series is deeply personal. "It's really special," Wylie said. "I feel so lucky to be a part of something I've grown up watching and that's close to my heart." The cast literally grew up on the High School Musical films, from owning lunch boxes to performing the musical in elementary school.

Original Music and East High Easter Eggs
Federle championed original songs alongside remixes of beloved classics. After learning Rodrigo was a songwriter, he gave her a shot at composing. "Three days later, she turned around a song that Regina Spektor would want to write, which was so special," Federle said. The series also filmed at the real East High in Salt Lake City, the same school that hosted the original trilogy.
Paris has the Eiffel Tower, and Salt Lake has East High.
While filming, the team uncovered original props tucked away from the first movies, including Sharpay's pink microphone and a backpack that once belonged to Zac Efron. "It was like descending upon a museum," Federle recalled. Saperstein summed up the heart of the series: "You get to see every character go on this journey where they find the people that make them spark and make them excited to be themselves."
