The Buzz

Diego Luna moves from Andor to a Disney fairy tale

Variety reported that Luna will appear in Disney's live-action adaptation of Tangled alongside Teagan Croft of Titans, Milo Manheim of Zombies, and Kathryn Hahn of The Studio. The role Luna is playing has not been announced. For the actor, it is a short walk across the Disney lot: he spent two seasons anchoring the Star Wars series Andor as Cassian Andor, a character first introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The team behind the remake

Michael Gracey, who directed the box-office musical The Greatest Showman, is helming the film from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor. Kristin Burr is producing through Burr! Productions, with Jessica Virtue, executive vice president of production, overseeing the project for Disney Live Action. Filming is set to begin in Spain. Luna is represented by WME and ID PR.

Revisiting the original Tangled

The 2010 animated Tangled was Walt Disney Animation Studios' 50th feature and a turning point for the studio, mixing computer animation with a hand-drawn look. Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, it retold the Brothers Grimm tale of Rapunzel, the long-haired heroine of "let down your hair" fame, and paired Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi with an Alan Menken and Glenn Slater song score that included "I See the Light" and "When Will My Life Begin." The film grossed more than $591 million worldwide and made Rapunzel an official member of the Disney Princess lineup.

What this means for fans

Disney's live-action slate has already reworked Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Lilo and Stitch, so a Tangled remake fits the pattern. The interesting wrinkle is the crew: Gracey knows how to stage a big movie musical, which matters for a property built on Menken and Slater songs, and Luna brings dramatic weight that Star Wars fans already trust. There is no release date yet, but with filming lining up in Spain, expect casting details, including who plays Rapunzel, to follow.
