Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin: How to Hit Galactic Hero on the Refreshed Magic Kingdom Attraction
Walt Disney World's refreshed Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin adds a new pre-show character, redesigned Star Cruisers, upgraded blasters, and interactive bonus targets. Here's how to maximize your score and reach Galactic Hero on the updated Magic Kingdom ride.

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin has been refreshed at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, and the updated attraction is packed with new ways to chase the coveted rank of Galactic Hero. New ride vehicles, upgraded blasters, smarter targets, and a brand-new pre-show character named Buddy are all in play — and with a little strategy, any Space Ranger can push their score into the stratosphere.
Quick Tips for High-Scoring Space Rangers
- Aim for the center of every target to make each shot count.
- Harder-to-hit targets are worth more points — don't be afraid to go for the challenge.
- Watch for targets that light up or look different. Those are worth extra.
- Experiment with strategy. There is more than one path to Galactic Hero.
A Familiar Mission With Brand-New Tech
Tucked into Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom, Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin is still the classic blaster-based dark ride fans have loved for years. Many of the legacy "secret" high-value targets are still right where longtime guests remember them — but there is a whole new layer of interactivity sitting on top of the familiar framework.
Here is what's new:
- A brand-new scene featuring Buddy — a friendly support-bot created by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios to join the Star Command team. Buddy prepares departing Space Rangers and offers a great warm-up chance to practice your aim before the real mission begins.
- Redesigned Star Cruisers sporting a Buzz Lightyear and Star Command color scheme, plus onboard video monitors that deliver real-time scoring updates.
- New handheld blasters with always-on lasers, two distinct blaster colors per cruiser, and fresh lighting, sound, and vibration effects so riders of all ages can see exactly where they are aiming.
- Interactive targets upgraded with new tech that flashes when you land a hit. Keep an eye out for targets that randomly show a white or multicolor ring — those matter.
Watchout Tip
Check your blaster color before you fire. You'll see either red or green, and that same color lights up on any target you hit dead center so you know the shot counted.
Why Farther Targets Are Worth More Points
If you are chasing the Galactic Hero rank, distance is your friend. The greater the distance — or the more challenging the shot — the more points a target is worth. Line up the center, breathe, and fire. Disney Parks Blog reporter Peyton compared the challenge to battling siblings on Toy Story Mania! at Disney's Hollywood Studios, and even admitted to nursing a sore bicep by the time the mission wrapped.
Boost Your Score With Standout Targets
As you travel through the attraction, some targets randomly illuminate with a white outer ring. Those targets are worth double their normal value for as long as the ring is active, and they stay that way until you hit them. Hit one and your score can leap forward in a hurry.
Even rarer — and far more valuable — is the multicolor-ringed target. This is the single most valuable target in the entire game. It appears at random in only one location at a time, and if nobody hits it within a few seconds, it vanishes and reappears somewhere else. Land that multicolor shot and you trigger a vehicle-wide bonus mode in which every target in the current scene is worth significantly more points for a brief window. When the outer ring starts to count down by extinguishing, you know the bonus is ending — keep firing until the last moment.
Every Target Counts at the End of the Mission
The scoring doesn't stop when the final shot is fired. As the mission wraps up, every distinct target you have hit during the ride is tallied and contributes to a bonus added just before your final rank is revealed. That means consistency really pays off — the more unique targets you hit, the bigger that end-of-mission score bump gets. This rewards players who stay engaged from start to finish instead of camping on a single high-value target.
Choose Your Path: More Than One Way to Level Up
Galactic Hero is still the top rank, but there is no longer just one way to reach it. The redesign rewards different play styles, and any of them can legitimately save the universe:
- The Veteran Path: The original secret high-value targets are still in the game, joined by a few new ones. Their individual value has been reduced, but the new blaster hardware makes them much easier to hit — so longtime players who memorized the old hot spots can still blast them repeatedly for a rock-solid score.
- The Precision Path: Focus on the white-ringed and multicolor-ringed targets. A single multicolor hit triggers the bonus mode and can launch you toward Galactic Hero in one shot.
- The Explorer Path: Hit as many distinct targets as possible. While this alone may not crack Galactic Hero, the end-of-mission distinct-target bonus gives wide-ranging players a real reward.
What This Means for Disney World Fans
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin has always been one of Magic Kingdom's most beloved interactive attractions, and this refresh gives both nostalgic veterans and first-time Space Rangers fresh reasons to keep coming back. With refreshed gameplay, new blasters, a pre-show warm-up with Buddy, and multiple paths to Galactic Hero, every mission is a new chance to prove you've got what it takes.
Whether you're chasing a personal best or setting your sights on the top rank, the refreshed attraction is worth adding to your Walt Disney World day plan. As Peyton put it — to infinity and beyond!
