The Mortensen Family: 80 Years of Combined Service
When Chris Mortensen first walked through the casting doors at Disneyland Resort 40 years ago, he was applying for a summer job at Tomorrowland Terrace. That seasonal position grew into a full-time career spanning four decades, becoming the cornerstone of a multigenerational family legacy at the resort.

A Family Rooted in Disney
Ten years into his tenure, Chris met Michelle through mutual coworkers — a meeting that led to marriage and a family built around a shared love of Disney. The couple raised four children who grew up with the parks as a second home.

“Sometimes it’s hard to differentiate the family story from the Disney story,” Chris said. “So many things that we did, we did it here. It’s so ingrained in who we are.”

Chris’s sister, Kerry, also built a career at the company and is celebrating 25 years of service in 2026. The next generation has now joined the fold as well: Chris’s daughter, Meghan, recently became a cast member, adding a new chapter to a story that already spans 80 combined years.

The West Coast Service Celebration
On the evening of March 12, Chris and Kerry were recognized alongside colleagues at the West Coast Service Celebration held at Disney California Adventure. The event featured food and beverages, DJs, live entertainment, character appearances, a special presentation of World of Color, and a red-carpet arrival ceremony.

The Walt Disney World Service Celebration: January 27, 2026
The tradition traces its roots to the Disneyland Tencennial in 1965, when Walt and Roy O. Disney personally honored the park's original cast members. Walt Disney presented those first awards himself, establishing a culture of recognition that has grown across every Disney destination worldwide.

A Red-Carpet Night at Magic Kingdom
Cast members and their families gathered at Magic Kingdom for an after-hours celebration featuring private attraction access, rare character moments, and live entertainment. Milestone anniversaries honored ranged from 10 to 50 years.

Elaine West Grimes, a 50-year cast member at 50's Prime Time Café, reflected: “Disney has felt like home for 50 years. Each day has given me the chance to make magic for our guests. These cast members and our guests are like family, and together we keep the magic going.”
Leadership Voices
Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle, himself a 35-year Disney veteran who started as an entry-level engineer in 1990 and contributed to the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom and Shanghai Disney Resort, shared remarks honoring the assembled cast. Melissa Valiquette, Vice President of Park Operations, celebrating 30 years with the company, also addressed the crowd.

Multigenerational Families at Walt Disney World
One of the evening's most emotional moments came when recently retired 30-year cast member Kimmie Sue Hall attended alongside her son, also a cast member. Walt Disney Imagineering veteran Diego Parras, celebrating 35 years, reflected on beginning his Disney journey at Star Tours at age 17.

Why Cast Members Stay
More than 80,000 Disney cast members call Central Florida home, with an average tenure of 12 years — triple the national average. The company offers industry-leading benefits from day one, including healthcare, childcare support, legal resources, and paid time off, alongside milestone recognition programs like the Service Celebration.
What This Means for Cast Members
The Disney Service Celebration is more than a party — it is a formal acknowledgment that long-tenured cast members are the foundation of the guest experience. Families like the Mortensens and the multigenerational households honored at Walt Disney World illustrate that Disney careers often span not just decades, but entire family histories. For prospective cast members and current employees alike, the celebration underscores the company's commitment to retention, recognition, and career growth.
