A New Chapter in Haunted Mansion Lore
The Haunted Mansion first opened at Disneyland Park in 1969, and over the following decades it spawned three additional park attractions, multiple film adaptations, and extensive merchandise lines. The Haunted Mansion Parlor on the Disney Treasure extends this legacy with a brand-new storyline: the venue is presented as the private parlor of a jovial sea captain whose sudden disappearance — along with that of his mysterious bride — remains unsolved. Guests are invited to search the space for hidden clues that may reveal the truth about the couple’s fate.
The Aquarium with Ghost Fish: Rolly Crump’s Forgotten Concept Realized
During the original design of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, Disney Imagineer Rolly Crump proposed an exhibit called the “Museum of the Weird,” including a concept for an aquarium filled with ghost fish. While many of Crump’s ideas were incorporated into the finished attraction, the ghost fish aquarium remained unrealized for more than five decades. A new generation of Disney Imagineers referenced Crump’s original sketch to build a modern version of the Aquarium with Ghost Fish for the Haunted Mansion Parlor.
The aquarium is embedded in the parlor’s backstory: according to legend, the sea captain was last seen entering his parlor for a special meal prepared by his bride. After both disappeared, the only trace left was his floating hat, found drifting in the aquarium tank.
An Eerie Portrait Gallery
The Haunted Mansion Parlor’s portrait gallery will feature wandering souls who have taken up residence aboard the Disney Treasure. The paintings echo the art style established by Disney Imagineers in 1969, while incorporating modern technology to allow the ghostly subjects to interact with guests in new ways.
The Mariner — a character originally conceived by famed Disney animator Marc Davis — already occupies the halls of Haunted Mansion attractions at Walt Disney World Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort. His presence aboard the Disney Treasure extends his story into the nautical setting for the first time.
The portrait of The Captain depicts a good-humored sea captain whose lifelong dream of serving aboard a luxury ocean liner ended with his untimely death. His merry spirit has lingered in the parlor ever since.
The Captain’s bride-to-be draws from Marc Davis’ iconic “cat lady” concept featured in the original attraction. In the parlor, her portrait is designed to flicker, hinting at her true nature. According to the backstory, The Captain first encountered her while responding to a distress signal from a sinking vessel — arriving to find only wreckage and a lone survivor with bright green eyes, chestnut hair, and a golden key around her neck. The couple became engaged shortly after. What happened next remains a mystery for guests to unravel.
Exclusive Drinkware: The Mariner and The Bride Mugs
The portrait gallery also inspired a Disney Cruise Line-exclusive commemorative mug collection debuting aboard the Disney Treasure. The ceramic mugs are designed to resemble objects carved from the weathered planks of a ghost ship, with the first two designs honoring The Mariner and The Bride. Additional designs are planned for the series.
What This Means for Haunted Mansion Fans
The Haunted Mansion Parlor is one of the most ambitious themed bar concepts Disney Cruise Line has announced. It extends a 55-year-old attraction’s lore with original characters, realizes a piece of design history from Rolly Crump’s unrealized vault, and pairs the setting with Disney Cruise Line-exclusive collectibles. The venue opens when the Disney Treasure sets sail on its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. More information is available at DisneyCruise.com.
